Join the Franklin Youth Advisory Board

General

The Franklin Youth Advisory Board is the voice of Franklin's young people in local government.

We advise the Franklin Local Board and Auckland Council on issues that are important to young people, and give feedback on council plans and policies ranging from public transport to psychoactive substances.

As one of 18 local youth boards/advisory groups in Auckland, we also volunteer locally, advocate for better facilities and services, and organise community events and programmes.

We want 7 new faces to replace members who have reached the end of their terms on the board. If selected, you can expect opportunities including mentoring, working with political and community leaders, developing your leadership skills and making meaningful social and community change.

Eligibility

To apply to join the Franklin Youth Advisory Board, you must:

Location

Auckland Council Pukekohe Service Centre, 82 Manukau Road, Pukekohe

What does the youth advisory board do?

  1. Consultation: Our chief role is giving feedback to the local board, council and CCOs on policies and plans that affect young people. You don't need to know a lot about policy to be a youth advisory board member – you just need to be willing to learn new information, and passionate about representing the needs and interests of young people.
  2. Advocacy: We advocate for causes we deem important to young people, like getting better public transport services and community facilities.
  3. Volunteering: We support charity organisations and deliver events and programmes for young people and families.

Responsibilities

  • Discuss, debate and develop ideas relating to issues affecting Franklin's young people.

  • Bring youth issues in the community to the board's attention.
  • Work on projects as a group between meetings, when required.
  • Use your community relationships and networks to the advantage of the board.

Time commitment

You will be expected to attend one meeting a month in Pukekohe on a Tuesday evening. Meeting dates will be agreed by the board and notified in advance. Attendance is expected and is crucial to your role. Other meetings may be held in between, as needed and depending on workload.

Some board members may accept or be elected to positions that require a greater time commitment.

Benefits
